New eco-home development in Tranton Road celebrated

October 07

A new development of 54 affordable homes for rent and shared ownership, (part rent and part buy), is being officially opened on Wednesday 24th October by Nick Stanton, Southwark Council Leader and Metropolitan Housing Trust Regional Director, Sue Ellenby.

The flagship homes developed by Metropolitan Housing Partnership, (MHP) and funded by the Housing Corporation’s New Partnerships in Affordable Housing programme, are designed with innovative environmental features, meeting both lifetime homes and ‘Very Good’ eco homes standards. The materials used in the development and the range of sustainable features reduce the impact of the homes of the environment and mean lower energy costs for the occupiers.

The high density design does not compromise needs of families living at Tranton Road. The large ground floor apartments with gardens are ideal for families and other apartments have good sized balconies that provide a usable outdoor space. Full height glass windows and innovative light wells make the most of natural light on both sides of the building.

Earlier efforts by other developers to build on this site failed due to objections from local residents. MHP worked closely with local people to design and build homes that they wanted to see on this site. The final development improves the local environment whilst meeting local housing need. The scheme was supported by the late Cllr Stephen Flannery, who was instrumental in helping gain planning permission bringing both residents and partners together. One of the three main blocks of the scheme has been named Flannery Court, a fitting tribute to one of its greatest supporters.

Nick Stanton Southwark Council Leader commented;

“Stephen Flannery made a big impact in a small time. He worked hard on improving the plans for this development and winning support for them with the community, and he showed real political talent in his role as executive member for housing.

“Flannery Court is a fitting memorial, both to his interest in housing, and to his work in Riverside Ward.”

Sue Ellenby, Regional Director of Metropolitan Housing Trust, said;

“The scheme is a great tribute to the local residents who helped shape the development from the very start and to all of our partners who have played a major role in bringing this successful project to completion. It is an illustration of how local community organisations can work together to regenerate the area. We look forward to developing future partnership projects in the area”.
