Waltham Cross is a thriving, friendly town near to the Hertfordshire/Essex border. It takes its name from the Eleanor Cross set up here by Edward I to mark where the body of his wife, Eleanor of Castille, rested on its journey South to Westminster Abbey. It is one of 12 crosses erected to mark the overnight stops of the funeral corsage.
As well as boasting this landmark, Waltham Cross edges the Lea Valley Park, which runs from the Thames in East London out to Ware in Hertfordshire and offers opportunity for cycling, walking, picnics and watersports.
There are plans to make the area around the cross into a piazza-style environment, which could attract pavement restaurants. The main town centre is pedestrianised, and has banks, shops and restaurants. Indian, Chinese and Italian are among the cuisines on offer.
